What is Copilot and how can your organisation leverage this tool?

Microsoft 365 Copilot transforms business processes by combining powerful large language models (LLMs) with your unique work context. It uses Microsoft Graph and Graph Connectors to provide context from emails, chats, documents and meetings. Enterprise Data Protection (EDP) keeps data securely within Microsoft 365, supporting GDPR and other compliance standards. Copilot Chat brings together web, work and business data into a central knowledge base, while Copilot Pages makes it easy to organise and share content for collaboration and project tracking. Integrated directly into Microsoft 365 apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, Copilot supports productivity within the flow of your work. In Microsoft Teams, it enhances collaboration with real-time meeting summaries and insights. Pre-built agents connect seamlessly with business tools like SharePoint, and Copilot Studio allows users to create and tailor workflow agents. The Copilot Control System also provides IT teams with strong data protection, management controls, measurement and reporting tools.

How can you access Copilot?

If you’re an existing Microsoft business customer with an eligible Microsoft 365 plan, you can add Copilot to your subscription directly through your Microsoft admin centre account. Microsoft 365 works in the apps you already use on a day-to-day basis, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and Outlook. As Copilot is tied to your specific Microsoft 365 credentials, it can only access data associated with your account.

What does Microsoft 365 Copilot have access to and how does it use your data?

  • Context-aware assistance: Copilot connects large language models (LLMs) with your organisation’s data to deliver tailored, intelligent responses.

  • Powered by Microsoft Graph: It pulls in data from emails, documents, calendars, chats, meetings, and contacts to understand user context.

  • Smart, relevant results: Copilot blends current activity (like meetings or recent emails) with historical content to generate accurate and useful responses.

  • Permission-based access: It only uses data users already have access to, while respecting existing Microsoft 365 permission settings (for example, SharePoint access controls).

  • Access control matters: Ensure permission models are correctly configured to protect sensitive information while enabling productive collaboration.

With 94% of SMBs in Australia already utilising Microsoft Office 365, now is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of its built-in tools, designed to boost productivity, improve efficiency, and help you reclaim your valuable time.
