7 Ways to Improve Sustainability with HP Hardware

You are here

Are you looking for ways to reduce your impact on the environment? A great place to start is to look at which companies your business is purchasing from. By choosing products that use sustainable supply chain processes and recycled materials, you can reduce your business’ impact on the environment and take steps towards a greener office. In this article will explore some of the main ways your business can improve hardware sustainability with HP.

1. Recycled materials and packaging

When it comes to achieving a more eco-friendly office, choosing hardware made from recycled materials is a great step. HP uses circular design principles to reduce environmental impacts across the value chain and make their hardware as sustainable as possible. During 2021, they used a whopping 32,000 tonnes of postconsumer recycled plastic (including ocean-bound plastics) in their products, as well as 4,300 tonnes of recycled metal and 7,200 tonnes of reused products and parts.

Packaging is another area where businesses generate a lot of waste. HP used 105,700 tonnes of recycled fibre in their paper and packaging in 2021 and 227,800 tonnes of certified sustainably managed fibre. From 2020, all HP brand paper and paper-based packaging for home and office printers and supplies, PCs, and displays have been derived from recycled or certified sources.

2. Hardware that helps save our oceans

Since 2016, HP have used 1,298 tonnes of ocean-bound plastics in their products—that’s more than 102 million 16.9 ounce (500ml) bottles—stopping it from reaching our precious waterways and oceans. The brand also collaborates on a range of initiatives to help boost the health of our environment. This includes working on the development of the Plastics Framework for Socially Responsible Ocean-Bound Plastic Supply Chains, supporting the Ocean Heroes Network to help educate readers about creating cleaner seas, joining the Ocean Plastics Leadership Network as founding members in 2020, and more.

3. Use less products with smart design

HP hardware now has a range of smart features that allow you to get more out of less. One example is using multi-purpose monitors to reduce the number of accessories your office is purchasing.

HP E34m Conferencing Monitor

This wide, curved monitor allows you to use a single monitor instead of multiple separate ones while also including a 5MP, tilt-adjustable web cam, dual microphones, and speakers. As well as simplifying your workspace and reducing clutter, it also helps you to cut back on waste.

4. Carbon footprint reduction

As companies look for ways to take climate action, HP are setting some serious goals and putting plans in place to make them happen. For example, by 2040, they aim to make their entire value chain net-zero greenhouse gas emissions (with a 50% reduction by the end of this decade). In 2021, HP’s carbon footprint was 9% less than in 2019, primarily due to their product related environmental efforts such as increased energy efficiency. HP also uses 100% renewable electricity to power the final assembly of over 95% of PC and display products worldwide.

5. Sustainable supply chains

Want to feel good about where your hardware has come from? HP works with their suppliers and partners throughout the value chain to drive net zero carbon and better resource efficiency. This includes helping these suppliers and partners to improve their environmental programs and using data from GHG emissions and goals, total and renewable energy use, water withdrawal, climate and water risks, and governance to make sure these efforts are leading to real results.

6. A brand that supports environmental initiatives

As well as making sure their hardware is made sustainably, HP also partners with conservation and environmental organisations to invest in forest restoration and ensure responsible management of potential impacts resulting from HP paper used in printing products.

7. Extending the life of hardware

By extending the life of hardware through proper maintenance, upgrades, repair, and recycling, you can help reduce landfill and even save money for your business. In partnership with HP, Area9 helps make this process as easy as possible with hardware management, maintenance, and recycling support.
