HP Elite Dragonfly: Is it the most sustainable laptop ever?

You are here

Information Technology’s quiet environmental cost can no longer be ignored, as the world shifts towards environmentally friendly business practices.

ICT equipment accounts for 1.4% of global greenhouse gas emissions, a number that's projected to rise in the coming years. And in 2019 alone, there were 53 million metric tonnes of e-waste, of which just 17.4 percent was documented to be properly recycled.

Thankfully, some companies provide solutions to reduce environmental impact. HP is one such company with sustainability as a part of its DNA for over 80 years. To date, HP has reduced over 28 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, recycled 352 tonnes of supplies and hardware, and empowered 349,000 workers through education programmes.

HP also boasts the world’s first notebook made with ocean-bound plastic, abandoned plastic on its way to the ocean, and 80% recycled materials: the HP Elite Dragonfly.

In this article, we'll examine the HP Dragonfly’s sustainable features that make it a standout laptop for businesses that are trying to reduce their environmental footprint.

HP Elitebooks are one of the most sustainable computers ever built, with 80% of the build coming from recycled materials and ocean-bound plastics. It received 25 awards at the 2020 Consumer Technology Association Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Let’s explore why.

What makes the Elite Dragonfly the world’s most sustainable laptop?

HP has tagged the Dragonfly range as “the world’s most sustainable PC platform”. Although this isn’t HP’s first effort at creating computers with sustainability as the biggest theme (the Pavilions of September 2020 were made from recycled plastics), it takes the effort several steps forward.

With impressive energy efficiency, sustainable build and packaging, and several other factors, this laptop sets a high bar for manufacturers. And can help you significantly reduce your carbon footprint.

  1. EPEAT certification

EPEAT stands for Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool. It is a well-recognized eco-label for evaluating electronic products based on sustainability criteria, such as:

  • Energy efficiency
  • Material selection, and
  • End-of-life disposal.

It is a voluntary program and companies get certification for their products after meeting mandatory and optional sustainability standards.

The highest level of certification available under the EPEAT program is the Gold certification. And the HP Elite Dragonfly has achieved this by meeting 75 of those criteria, including:

  • Use energy-efficient components and power management features to reduce energy consumption
  • Use recycled plastics to build the laptop's chassis
  • Use of ocean-bound plastics in the packaging of the device
  • Eliminate certain hazardous substances, such as mercury, lead, and cadmium
  • Make a take-back program available for the laptop at the end of its life

EPEAT-certified devices like the HP Elite Dragonfly help you make a positive impact on the environment by supporting a more sustainable future in ICT.

  1. TCO certification

When you see “TCO Certified” on a computer product, it means the Swedish Confederation of Professional Employees (TCO) approved that it maintains ecological standards and is ergonomic enough to prevent long-term health issues for users.

It focuses on three points of impact: environmental, usability, and quality. That means, in the entire lifecycle of the product—from manufacturing and use to its end-of-life disposal—the electronic meets the highest standards on those three fronts.

Many HP products, including the Dragonfly series, meet these standards — specifically, the 8th gen panel of certification criteria, which is the most exhaustive so far. The laptop uses environmentally friendly materials, including recycled plastics and ocean-bound plastics, in its construction.

Additionally, the PCs are designed to be easily upgradable and repairable, reducing the need for frequent replacements and minimising waste. They feature a long battery life and a lightweight design, making them convenient for on-the-go workers. This wins merit for usability.

  1. Materials and packaging

The HP Dragonfly series of PCs are constructed with environmentally friendly materials, such as recycled and ocean-bound plastics.

Ocean-bound plastics (OBP) are plastics that can end up in the ocean if not collected and recycled. When 80% of the plastic that pollutes the ocean and hurts aquatic life originates from land, we have an immense responsibility to fix things. HP uses plastics that would’ve otherwise ended up in the ocean to build Dragonfly laptops, thereby keeping them on land and useful.

Furthermore, the HP Dragonfly series of PCs features a durable and lightweight chassis made of magnesium alloy. This material is not only lightweight, making the laptops easy to carry around, but also durable, reducing the need for frequent replacements.

The already minimal packaging of Dragonfly products is also made from recycled materials. HP went all out on this particular range of laptops to ensure sustainability through and through.

  1. Energy efficiency (ENERGY STAR certification)

Another way this range of laptops from HP helps lower your carbon footprint is by being super energy-efficient. It has a low-impact power profile, and a long-life battery, making it ideal for people who work from various locations.

You won’t have to depend on public outlets or frequent recharges to stay productive throughout the day. With a power-efficient display, you use way less energy to stay on for longer.

The display has a brightness sensor that automatically adjusts your screen’s brightness to the brightness of the room you’re in. This not only makes it easy for your eyes but it also saves power.

Another important feature of the HP Dragonfly range of laptops is the low-power mode. This mode is designed to conserve energy by reducing the laptop's power consumption when not in use. This will trim your electricity bill.

These and more earned the HP Dragonfly range of laptops the ENERGY STAR certified status. This certification means that these devices meet strict energy efficiency standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Devices with this certificate conserve energy while emitting fewer greenhouse gases.

  1. Longevity

Think of the Dragonfly laptops as long-lasting investments. The build is so solid with a magnesium alloy chassis that underwent 19 MIL-STD 810g tests, ensuring that the laptop can withstand extreme temperatures, vibration, and shock.

In terms of repairability and upgradability, this is top-of-the-line. The laptop's spill-resistant keyboard, touchpad, and battery are all replaceable, making it easy to extend the lifespan of the device. You can upgrade the laptop's RAM and storage, so you can customize the laptop to your needs instead of getting a new one.

Talk about HP’s recycling programs: This is a core aspect of the HP Elite Dragonfly notebooks’ sustainability. HP has a take-back program that allows users to return their used laptops, including the HP Elite Dragonfly, for recycling at the end of their life cycle. This ensures that the laptops are kept out of landfills, reducing their environmental impact.

HP also has a closed-loop recycling program that allows for recycled materials to be used in the production of new devices. This program helps to reduce waste and minimise the environmental impact of production processes.
